Penobscot County Courthouse

Inventing an ADA-compliant lectern was new to us, but we were intrigued by the challenge to convert our classic solid wood model into a power-articulating podium

The Penobscot County Courthouse commissioned us to design adjustable-height lecterns that met ADA requirements. While this was new for us, our design team investigated several options before sourcing a pneumatic lift that uses a highly technical mechanism out of Switzerland, and engineered it into our solid hardwood podium. Subsequently we’ve outfitted 30 additional courtrooms in Maine, as well as the University of Maine, with these ADA solutions.

Additionally, we were asked to provide freestanding courtroom furniture that would match existing stains and fixed panel woodworking completed by Windham Millworks. Our craftspeople were able to make this happen through collaborative fine-tuning.

The finer details for this courtroom installation include:

  • ADA-compliant lecterns crafted in solid American cherry wood and fitted with a pneumatic lift
  • Furnishings that matched the finish of existing fine woodwork
